Bali With Kids: A Real Itinerary

Eight days that actually work with a stroller, a toddler nap schedule, and a nine-year-old who gets bored at temples β€” the pool villa worth the splurge, the water park that earns a full day, and the one boat trip we didn't do.

Most Bali itineraries are written for two adults with nowhere to be β€” sunrise hikes, five-hour temple loops, dinners that start at 9pm. None of that survives contact with a five-year-old. This is the version we actually ran with kids ages three and nine: one home base instead of three, a pool at every stop, and exactly one full-day excursion that doesn't leave room for a midday collapse.

Eight days, based in and around Seminyak and Ubud, with a rental villa instead of hotel-hopping. Nothing here requires an early alarm except the two mornings it's actually worth it β€” the rice terrace and the water park, both before the tour buses and the queues show up.

The best hour of the whole trip was unplanned: our nine-year-old feeding a baby goat at a rice-paddy warung while we drank coffee we didn't have to rush.

01The three things worth building the trip around

Everything else can flex around naps and weather. These three are the reason this itinerary exists in the first place.

A private pool at a family villa in Seminyak, Bali
Stay

A villa with its own pool, not a hotel with one

A gated compound near Seminyak with a fenced private pool, a kitchen for the nights nobody wants to leave, and a staff who'll happily watch the kids splash while you eat an actual meal.

Long-tailed macaques among the temple ruins at Ubud Monkey Forest, Bali
Play

Ubud Monkey Forest, right when it opens

The single biggest hit of the trip for both kids β€” jungle paths, stone bridges, and monkeys close enough to watch (not feed) for as long as attention spans allow.

Green rice terraces near Tegalalang, Bali
See

Tegalalang's rice terraces, before 9am

Early enough that the paths are empty and the light is soft β€” a warung at the top serves coconut and fried banana while the kids watch farmers work the paddies below.

02The itinerary, day by day

One villa near Seminyak for the whole trip β€” no repacking, no transfers with a sleeping toddler in the car.

01Arrival

Land, check in, do nothing

Fly into Denpasar, private transfer straight to the villa, and let the first day be entirely unplanned. Groceries delivered, pool time, an early dinner in. Jet lag with kids is not a day to fight.

02Seminyak

Beach mornings, pool afternoons

Double Six Beach for calm morning waves and beanbag cafΓ©s with a kids' menu, back at the villa by early afternoon before the heat and the nap window collide.

03Waterbom

The one full-day excursion that's worth it

A whole day at Waterbom Bali β€” a proper water park with a dedicated kids' area for the little one and real slides for the nine-year-old. Go on a weekday and you'll barely queue.

04Ubud transfer

Drive up to Ubud, slow afternoon

An hour's drive inland to a second, jungle-adjacent villa for two nights. Check in, then an easy stroll along Campuhan Ridge before dinner β€” flat, shaded, and stroller-friendly for the first half.

05Ubud

Rice terraces, then the monkeys

Tegalalang at 7:30am before the crowds, a mid-morning warung snack, then Ubud Monkey Forest once it opens at 9. Pool back at the villa for the rest of the afternoon.

06Back to the coast

Return to Seminyak, easy day

Drive back to the coast, no activities planned β€” a wander through a smaller local market, an early swim, and dinner at a beach club with a kids' pool built into the layout.

07Uluwatu

A short afternoon at the cliff temple

Uluwatu Temple in the late afternoon for the cliffside views and the sunset Kecak dance β€” a 45-minute show is about the ceiling for both kids' patience, and it's worth timing around exactly that.

08Departure

One last swim, then go

A slow villa breakfast, a final pool session before checkout, and a short drive to the airport β€” leaving enough buffer that nobody's rushing a toddler through security.

03What it actually costs

Per family of four, excluding international flights. Prices assume a mid-range private villa split across the stay.

CategoryNotesPer day (approx.)
Villa (private pool)Family of four, two locations across 8 nights$110–$180
FoodMostly local warungs, one nicer dinner every few days$45–$65

04Practical info

β˜€οΈ

Best time to go

May, June, or September β€” outside the peak July–August crowds and the wettest months, with reliable pool weather and short, manageable rain windows.

πŸš—

Getting around

Book a private driver for full days out (temples, water park, transfers) and use Grab for short local hops β€” car seats aren't standard, so bring a compact travel seat if your kids need one.

🧴

Pack for

Reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brim hat per kid, rash guards for the water park, and a printed copy of the villa address in Indonesian for drivers who don't have data.
